My wife and I agreed to a friendly and cheap divorce between us. We filed in South Carolina where we were living at the time of the divorce. Unfortunately, we went through a traditional divorce lawyer and paid her several thousands of dollars to file for a divorce but found out the lawyer only got us to a separation. Then she wanted more money to file a divorce. We were irate about this until we found Hello Divorce. We spoke to Heather and informed her of the situation, and she agreed to help us out and step us through submitting the correct paperwork to finalize our divorce to the state of South Carolina. Hello, Divorce, was fantastic and we really wished we would’ve started and ended with Hello Divorce. I would highly recommend Hello Divorce to anyone that is thinking of beginning a divorce process. Hello, Divorce, will walk you through what is needed and will show you the process to follow. They will save you so much money to settle a divorce and be with you ever step of the way. Hello Divorce can save a couple so much time, money and effort in the process.

Chris Freemott, with Hello Divorce, offered me very helpful, concrete advice, he listened attentively to understand my particular situation and gave me a very clear explanation and understanding of what my options were regarding the division of real estate in my divorce, namely the house, that I hoped to keep. He went even further and wrote a very concise letter outlining the facts with his recommendation that I keep the house. I showed the letter to my lawyer and brought it to mediation where everyone read it. It was not an open/shut situation but I was able to keep the house in the settlement, which was a huge relief and victory. Chris was very cooperative and wonderful to work with. I very much appreciate his advisement and help, it was invaluable to me.

Hello Divorce is incredibly accessible and has truly streamlined the process for me.I’ll point out just a few things that were especially important to me. The FREE 15-minute planning call is a phenomenal first step down the road to divorce. I came with some questions prepped (because I’m a planner), but even if you don’t know where to begin, give them a call. The reps will walk you through the process and save you from hours of searching the web. The ease with which I can schedule time with a very approachable attorney and/or divorce coach means I can get the help I need when I need it in the increments desired for a fair fee. If I only need half an hour of time with the attorney, that’s what I buy. I come prepared to work and I often get everything done right then. Neil has answered every one of my questions quickly and clearly, and I always come away feeling like the visit was worth every penny spent. Divorce coach Kim and I planned what the “big talk” could look like, and Kara helped me to reframe the feelings I had moving through the process. We didn’t have to get into old stuff like a therapist would; we just dealt with the current issue, saving me a ton of time and money. The FREE call with the divorce real estate strategist Chris was probably the most fortuitous of interactions with the platform. I didn’t know what he would do for me, but I figured that if he could even confirm that some options were viable for me in my individual situation, it’d be worth the time. Chris gave me clarity and additional options I was not yet familiar with. He also directed me to information about a lien on my home that I did not know about, something which could have potentially stalled a buyout or sale. Great catch that probably saved me, again, time and money. He also provided the exact language to use when contacting the credit union about the “release of lien” from the county recorder. My account coordinator, Courtney, handles my paperwork and lets me know about upcoming webinars. I wish I had some more immediate way to contact her for quick questions. All communication is via email and with time changes/work schedules, that means some questions don’t get answered until the next business day. Not a travesty, but it can slow down the work. Overall, I am pleased with my Hello Divorce experience thus far, and am grateful the whole team is there to support me.

I am in the middle of a divorce in California and have been using Hello Divorce resources since before I even filed. This platform is incredibly accessible and has truly streamlined the process for me. Yes, I pay for the Pro plan, through which I have a divorce specialist who guides me through the steps, proofs my paperwork before submission to the courts, and answers all of my many, many questions. But I also have taken advantage of the many free and low-cost resources on the Hello Divorce website. There is so much available information and guidance I could talk about, but I’ll try to point out just a few things that were especially important to me. Firstly, the free 15-minute planning call is a phenomenal first step down the road to divorce. I came with some questions prepped (because I’m a planner), but even if you don’t know where to begin, give them a call. The reps will walk you through the process and save you from hours of searching the web. Secondly, the ease with which I can schedule time with a very approachable attorney and/or divorce coach means I can get the help I need when I need it in the increments desired for a fair fee. I love that I don’t have to deal with a retainer or pay for so many hours of work if I don’t need it. If I only need half an hour of time with the attorney, that’s what I buy. I come prepared to work and I often get everything done right then. Neil has answered every one of my questions quickly and clearly, and I always come away feeling like the visit was worth every penny spent. Use their attorneys to get quick answers for a reasonable fee in the privacy of wherever you want to take the call. HD divorce coach Kim and I planned what the “big talk” could look like, and Kara helped me to reframe the feelings I had moving through the process. We didn’t have to get into old stuff like a therapist would; we just dealt with the current issue, saving me a ton of time and money. Moreover, the free call with the divorce real estate strategist Chris was probably the most fortuitous of interactions with the platform. I had received a free home equity buyout analysis early on in the process, which was good information. One day, months later, while clicking on the website, I found a link for a free call with Chris. I honestly didn’t know what he would do for me, but I like information and figured that if he could even confirm that some options were viable for me in my individual situation, it’d be worth the time. By happy accident, I had this wonderful (FREE!) Zoom with someone who gave me clarity andadditional options I was not yet familiar with. Chris also directed me to information about a lien on my home that I did not know about, something which could have potentially stalled a buyout or sale. That was a great catch that probably saved me, again, time and money. He gave me the exact language to say when contacting the credit union about the “release of lien” from the county recorder, and I am getting that lien taken care of. As well, my account coordinator, Courtney, keeps me informed as to the status of my paperwork and informs me of any upcoming webinars that might be useful. My only criticism of working with the coordinator is that I wish we had a chat function or some more immediate way to contact her for quick questions. All communication is via email and with time changes/work schedules, that means some questions don’t get answered until the next business day. Not a travesty, but it can slow down the work. Overall, I am pleased with my Hello Divorce experience thus far, and while I don’t want the divorce process to drag on for much longer, I am grateful the whole team is there to support me along the ride.

How do I file for divorce?
When it comes to the online divorce process, the first step is knowing how and where to file for divorce. You or your spouse must meet residency requirements for your state, and you (or your spouse) will file for divorce in the county where you meet the requirements.
Typcially, the first step in filing for divorce is letting your state know you are starting a divorce. You will fill out a Petition, then file it with your state (and pay your filing fee). Once the court approves this divorce form, you will be able to "serve" it to your spouse, letting them know you've started the divorce process.
Serving this divorce paperwork will start the your state's mandatory waiting period. If you work with Hello Divorce, we can review, file, and serve these documents for you.
Next, financial disclosures are generally required. As a Hello Divorce customer, our software will simplify and organize these documents for you.
The last step is working on an Agreement with your ex. It's ok to start the divorce process without an Agreement, but to have an uncontested divorce, you will need to work on a settlement. Hello Divorce has lots of services like lawyers, mediators, and divorce finance experts to help if you get stuck on this step.
What are the grounds for divorce?
There are two types of divorce: fault and no-fault. Fault divorces are the ones in which "grounds" for divorce matter.
In a fault divorce, the filing spouse holds the other spouse responsible for the end of the marriage.
Fault states for divorce are Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia. The District of Columbia also offers fault divorce.
Other no-fault divorce states are California, Wisconsin, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Nebraska, Montana, Missouri, Minnesota, Michigan, Kentucky, Kansas, Iowa, Indiana, Hawaii, Florida, and Colorado.
What’s the fastest way to get a divorce?
While there isn't really a "fast track" option for divorce (everyone needs to go through the waiting period and paperwork assigned by their state), if you and your spouse communicate well, behave reasonably, and quickly come to an agreement, you could be finished with your divorce relatively close to the shortest timeframe your state allows. Using an online service like Hello Divorce with expert help can greatly reduce your timeline.
Keep in mind that if you use a lawyer, most divorces take an average of 50-100% more time to complete.
How do I file for divorce online?
Uncontested divorce is easy to do online
“Uncontested divorce” is a type of divorce that is relatively easy and straightforward to complete online. When both spouses agree or are working to agree on all the terms of the divorce, including things like property division, spousal support or alimony, child support, and child custody, the divorce is uncontested. As such, it can generally be completed online with minimal hassle.
One of the biggest advantages of uncontested divorce is that it allows spouses to resolve any disputes they may have quickly and amicably. This can help minimize conflict during a stressful time.
The pros of filing online with a service like Hello Divorce include lower divorce costs and greater convenience. Additionally, our software asks simple, straightforward questions so you can avoid the confusion of trying to understand court forms, minimizing the need for legal assistance or intervention, which saves time and money.
Contested divorce is not always easy to do online
Contested divorces involve major disputes between the two spouses and generally both spouses have hired lawyers. The disputes typically center on issues like child custody and the division of property. This type of divorce is more difficult to complete than an uncontested one, as it requires time and money, and in some cases, court time to reach a resolution.
What’s the cheapest way to get a divorce?
The average cost of divorce is $20,000 per person. At Hello Divorce, we're proud that we've managed to lower the average cost of divorce for our users to just $1,500.
We've done that by speeding up the paperwork process through our Divorce Navigator software, which helps you complete all of your divorce paperwork online through a guided series of questions. Save your work as you go, and work at your own pace. When you're done, the click of a button lets you print your official divorce paperwork and file yourself, or have one of our account coordinators handle it all for you so you never have to deal with the court or the confusion of the divorce process.
Do I need an attorney for a military divorce?
You do not need to have a lawyer if you are in the military and are filing for divorce. However, there are some differences in the process.
In a civilian marriage, a spouse will file for divorce in the county where they live. However, military members must file for divorce where the service member is stationed or in the state where he or she is a resident.
How do I prepare for a divorce?
If you have made the decision to divorce, but don't know what to do next, it's helpful to understand the divorce process and take the journey one step at a time.
- First, use a Pre-Leaving Checklist to make sure you have your finances and other personal affairs in order.
- If you want to get your waiting period started, sign up to start a plan and file your Petition. The Petition doesn't decide anything in your divorce, it just lets your spouse and the court know that you are starting the process.
- Work with your spouse on an Agreement when you're ready. You don't have to have this when you start the process. If you need help, use mediators and divorce finance experts to help you.
- You may find working with a divorce coach helpful to be by your side and help you through the process.
How long does the divorce process take?
The waiting period for divorce varies from state to state (ranging from no waiting period to 6 months) and starts once you serve the Petition to your spouse, which usually can happen within 1-2 weeks after starting your paperwork.
At least one of you must meet the residency requirements in your state. So, if you want to divorce quickly, avoid moving before filing.
